Never look back
In England, indoor cycling is a male-dominated sport. So just by being a woman, you stand out. As the two-time world champion, you really get noticed. The press calls me "Queen Victoria" and the paparazzi follow me. But all I see is Olympic gold. I'm working out like mad for 2008: power lifting, hours on the bike and tests in the physiology lab to see how far I can push my body. If I'm going to be England's queen of cycling, I want to do my country proud.
Q & A
- How do you see yourself?
- I would say I was weird. I enjoy training hard, it hurts but I don't mind. I accept the fact that I don't really fit in to any category. I do my own thing.
- What are the things that inspire you?
- I am inspired by my male teammates and their success; I want to be seen as an equal to them.
- What is the greatest lesson you have ever learned?
- Don't be disheartened; never take someone else's opinion as fact. Early in my career, a person in authority told me that I was wasting my time in the sprint event, due to my build. He was convinced that I wouldn't make it. I proved him wrong when I won my first world title.
- What is the greatest thing you have taught somebody else?
- Don't rely on someone else to make you happy. Happiness comes from inside not outside.
- What do you hold the most valuable to you in life?
- My family and friends. My sport is important to me but it is the people that really matter.
- What are the 3 biggest things you learned from your parents?
-
- You can only do your best.
- Don't give up.
- It's not the end of the world.
- Who is the most influential person in your life and why?
- My father. He introduced me to the sport. I value his knowledge and opinion.
- What makes you different from other girls or just unique?
- I am aspiring to be the best in the world, despite the fact that I do not traditionally fit the requirements of size, build and appearance.
- What are you passionate about and why?
- Food! Because how can you not be.
- What interests do you have other than cycling and why?
- I like eating out with friends, shopping and cooking. They are all things I am allowed to do without affecting training.
- What made you start in your sport and why?
- My dad was always a keen cyclist. I spent my childhood watching him race and took the sport up with my twin brother as a hobby. I enjoyed anything competitive.
- Who do you aspire to be in life?
- I aspire to hopefully be a role model to young girls who are struggling to fit in. I want to be an example of doing it differently and still being successful. To show that you can be sporty and strong but still remain feminine, in any sporting arena.
