Masters of Vision
I’m inspired by failure. The process of defeat – picking yourself back up again is the hardest thing in the world.
Lolo Jones / Track & Field
Depth perception is huge for me. And I just wouldn't trust myself with anybody else's shades. Believe me, I've tried other products. They fell off my face, shifted when I ran, affected my depth perception or some combination of all that. At the World Championships, I put on Oakleys — thought they felt good. Natural. It happened to be sunny on race day so I wore ´em. And I've been wearing them ever since.
Off the track, people say she's a 10 for looks. On it? A 1. That's because Ms. Jones is so competitive, she's developed an alter ego: the “Run Grinch.” And while the famous green dude had a heart buried deep down, on race day, Lolo's all business. Breaking records — and hearts — one hurdle at a time. Run Grinch. Run.
Interview
Talk about going fast:
I don't really think about fast. It's like overcoming obstacles in life: you just see it in front of you. It seems hard. It IS hard. But you just work to get over it. For me, that's done in the fastest technical way possible — there are so many elements to going fast. But at the same time, it's a non-thinking process. I just try to focus on the little things, and then the big picture comes together.
You've had some tough times personally:
I was living in Louisiana. It was 115 degrees outside — and I had no air conditioning. I was broke. I couldn't afford anything. Friends would come over and they'd think I was just trying to save money. I had doubts: is this really going to work?
And professionally:
At my very first Olympic trials, I was the first person to not make the final. I missed the team by like, .0001 seconds. That was the roughest night — the toughest pill to swallow as an athlete.
But that made you stronger:
I'm inspired by failure. By being told I can't do something. Defeat — the process of picking yourself back up. Learning — and losing — hurts like hell. It's the hardest thing in the world. But beating the odds? Everybody likes an underdog. It makes running with the top dogs that much sweeter. And that's why I work so hard.
